Bunting banners are a fantastic way to add color and flair to any occasion. Whether it's a birthday, holiday, or special event, they always bring joy! They are easy to create, customize, and store. I have collected different banners for various holidays and special moments. Today, we'll focus on creating a Batman bunting banner for my partner's birthday.
Why Choose a Bunting Banner?
Bunting banners are not only visually appealing, but they also add a theme to your event. Their versatility allows for endless creativity. Plus, they are practical as they fold up nicely and don’t take up much space. With just a few materials, you can personalize them exactly how you want!
This Batman bunting banner design features identical fabric on both sides, with one side boasting extra details. I decided to use fabric leftover from some previous projects for this decoration.
Supplies Needed
Just a note: Some links are affiliate links. This means if you purchase through them, I will earn a small commission. Most supplies are available at local craft or fabric stores.
Fabric
- Option 1: Pre-printed bunting banner panel. Check out this cute birthday option.
- Option 2: At least two different fabrics, typically cotton.
Triangle Ruler - This is my exact ruler.
Cutting Fabric
Cutting fabric is essential for your banner. If using a pre-printed panel, simply follow the lines. If you’re crafting from scratch, here are the steps:
Cut the fabric into 8-inch strips using the straight ruler, rotary cutter, and cutting mat.
Align the ruler, ensuring the bottom matches the fabric edge and the triangle point touches the opposite edge.
Cut along the ruler’s sides.
Realign the ruler to cut more triangles, repeat until enough flags are cut.
Cut 1.5-inch strips for hanging the banner. Make these longer than needed, adding an extra 10 to 15 inches.
Sewing the Banner Together
Now it’s time to sew your bunting!
With the right sides together, sew along two edges, leaving the top edge open. Use a 1/4-inch seam allowance.
Iron the seams to create neat edges.
Trim the point of each flag slightly to reduce bulk.
Turn the flags right side out.
Iron the seams by carefully using your iron inside the flags.
Flatten the bunting banners for the best look.
Assembling the Bunting Banner

Start by joining the 1.5-inch strips by sewing them together.
Arrange your bunting flags in the desired order.
Leave a 10-inch gap on the 1.5-inch strip before sewing on your first flag.
Sew the flags onto the strip, maintaining a 1/4-inch seam allowance.
Press each flag, directing the seam allowance towards the 1.5-inch strip.
Fold the un-sewn edge down 1/4 inch, and then fold it in half, wrapping it around the flags’ top edges. Secure with clips.
Sew along the top edge, enclosing the seam allowances of the flags within the strip.
For the strip's ends, fold and sew the first 3-4 inches. Clip the corner at a 45-degree angle, and insert the edge into the strip’s end to form a loop. Stitch this securely.

Adding Details - If Desired
Your bunting banner is done and ready to be displayed! However, consider adding finishing touches to enhance its appearance. I typically create identical sides so I can choose between a plain and a decorated display side.
For this Batman banner, I used a Cricut with heat transfer vinyl (HTV) to add Batman designs. Additionally, I glued on some black rhinestones for extra shine.
Creative Ideas for Additional Details
Add lace to the edges while sewing.
Incorporate lace on the top strip.
Use rhinestones for sparkle.
Include heat transfer vinyl (HTV) for designs.
Attach yarn pom-poms.
Tie strips of fabric or lace between the flags for an added touch.
