Fabric Store Review: Mary Maxim
I recently visited Mary Maxim in Paris, ON to check out the Fabric Selection, pricing, notions, tools and overall shopping experience. I also grab 2 cuts of fabric to measure at home. To test their overall accuracy back at home.
Here is my full fabric store review of my visit to Mary Maxim.
Just as a quick note, before getting started. I do not accept of money, or gifts for my review. I try my very best to not have the staff working, figure I am reviewing the store, so they will act as they would, if you were visiting them.

First Impressions
The store was just at the beginning of their tent sale. So I started in the big tent on the side of the store. The tent was well organized, and really kept neat. Especially since it was the busiest part of the store.
Since Mary Maxim is mostly a yarn store, for knitters and crocheters. Half the tent was just yarn, of various types.
The other half was some home goods, and other craft related items. There was no fabric in the tent, so I moved indoors.
Fabric Selection
The selection of Fabric is limited, or one could say very curated collection.
There is about one aisle worth of fabric. It seems bigger as there is the cutting table in the center of the aisle.
All the fabric I was able to find was quilting cotton, with very limited selection of themes. Mainly baby, floral and some basics themes.
Mary Maxim is more for those into yarns, and they had a huge selection of yarn types. colours. etc. However I am reviewing fabric selections today.
Sales Sections
So I was the store, during their tent sale. Which had some deals inside the store as well.
The fabric sale was pretty good.
Only fabrics priced regularly $16.99, were on sale. Leaving a few other fabric from the sale, with no other deals.
Notions, Supplies & Tools
For tools, notions and any other sewing supplies the selection was at the back of the aisle.
Even with the bigger aisle space, the space given enough to have the basics needed.
This store would be great for a beginner, who doesn't want to get overwhelmed with options.
They did have a full thread selections, which is always a wonderful thing to see.
Mary Maxim does have a little bit of everything for many other crafts. There was a half aisle for needle point crafts, diamond art kits, etc.
Staff & Cutting Table Experience
Staff was friendly and made time for anyone asking questions, needing help finding something. Especially with how busy the store was with the tent, the staff made anyone feel rushed, or that it was too much.
I was going to grab 2 fabrics. One meter and another for a 5" cut.
Only to learn that the store only does full meter cuts.
Which can be so frustrating when you only want a piece of fabric, and not a whole meter.
Cut Accuracy Test
Since I could not get 5" cut of fabric, I opted to grab a fat quarter of fabric from the back wall.

Requested: 20 x 22 inches
Actual measurement: 21.5 x 19.75"
Meter Cut
Requested 39. 37 inches
Actual Measurement: 40"

Overall, Mary Maxim is a great option for spot for someone new to sewing. The selection is limited, which can help in not feeling overwhelmed. Its also great for someone maybe coming in for knitting or crochet but needs something sewing related for a different project.
Its not going to be a seamstress, or quilter's dream spot, and it not trying to be.
